All circles should ideally be visible on an accurately calibrated and profiled display, although it's ok if the topmost and middle circles are hard to see (they will be easier to see in a dark room). Each circle has a lightness difference of L*=1 (in the sRGB color space) from the previous circle (or the background in case of the topmost circle on each side). For that purpose, several test profiles are available which, when installed and assigned to a display device, will introduce a strong color cast to the whole display-except in correctly color managed applications that use the display profile, which will cancel out the color cast. You will also want to make sure that an application is actually using the display profile and not a generic profile like sRGB. You may also download this test for off-line use.
